M2TM South Wales 2020 Interviews: Altered Myths (Interview By Paul Hutchings)

Altered Myths M2TM interview

The first of our M2TM interviews for 2020 starts with Altered Myths. In our usual format I emailed the band some questions and watched the inbox for the response. Here’s what they said.

MoM: Let’s start with some background. Give us a potted history of the band.

Altered Myths: We are Altered Myths.A heavy trashy rock/metal duo from Cardiff. Formed in late 2017 "Along with guitarist Eskay, frontman and drummer Matik has created visual curiosity and this unique approach has allowed this duo to push boundaries and perceptions with both their sound and performance."

MoM: Introduce us to the current line-up

Altered Myths: Matt 'Matik' O'Brien - drums / vocals & Steve 'Eskay' Kenward - guitar / bass

MoM: How would you describe the band’s sound?

Altered Myths:

1 scoop of Sabbath

2 tins of Zeppelin

1 loaf of thick peanut butter

Sprinkle of QOTSA

Put in a bin

Cold oven set to 90°C

For 47 hours.

MoM: Who are the main influences for the band?

Altered Myths: Biffy Clyro Led Zeppelin Daft Punk Black Sabbath Queens of the Stone Age, George Carlin

MoM: What prompted you to apply for M2TM?

Altered Myths: We got to the semi-finals of the Oxford M2TM last year (Matt lived in Oxford at the time) and we had such a laugh, meeting good people, great bands and it gave us the opportunity to play in front of so many passionate metal fans. It was also a good to play some good venues. So we are ready for round 2.

MoM: What can we expect from you at Fuel?

Altered Myths: 8 or 9 different riffs

MoM: The competition seems to bring out the best in all the bands and last year’s competition was incredibly close but with a friendly rivalry that was great to see. How do you view the state of the rock and metal scene in South Wales now?

Altered Myths: There's so many amazing bands out there, Welsh bands have always stuck together, helped each other put shows on together. The metal scene is just a huge family, and we have been welcomed with slightly opened arms.

MoM: How many of the bands involved in the competition do you know and who would you tip to get to the final?

Altered Myths: We've played with about 7 of them all amazing bands. Look out for Incursion and That which ate the moon. But Igam Ogam for the win!!

MoM: Lemmy once said “if we moved in next door your grass would die”. If you moved in next door, what would happen to my lawn?

Altered Myths: Your lawn would move to our lawn.

MoM: And finally, tell us something unusual about each band member that you feel needs to be shared with the rest of the metal community.

Altered Myths:

Matik - I'm a published poet

Eskay - I love chair museums.

Thanks to Altered Myths for taking the time and trouble. You can find more about the band at the following links but best of all see them live on 6th March at Fuel Rock Club in Heat 1 of 2020’s Metal to the Masses.
