A View From The Back Of The Room: Suffering (Alice Doyle)

Suffering, Iselder & Adfeilion, Fuel Rock Club, Cardiff, 05.09.25

I had missed every opportunity to catch Adfeilion (9) in person, and by now had very high expectations. Using an ethereal narration rather than lyrical vocals, they left room for the music to fill us from the inside and let our minds fill the gaps.

Adfeilion managed to tick almost every one of my imaginary boxes for what a post-folk metal should sound like, and despite the lack of vocals managed to keep me engaged and excited. Each member of the band worked very effortlessly together, and the sound was serene - heavy, but not oppressive. Quest complete.

I wrote in my notes “feels like satan went on holidays”, and I believe that summarises how Iselder (8) came across to me. They went hard and it absolutely worked, but I wasn’t feeling the black metal vibes. At times they sounded almost happy, whilst the lyrics remained dark and foreboding - which is why I found myself picturing the king of hell sipping sangria in the tropics. No shade, though (literally?), as I very much enjoyed the set and found the band to be talented in what they were doing. The drummer in particular did an exceptional job. I’ll pack my Hawaiian shirt for next time.

I’m not an avid listener of black metal, but with fondness for doom I cautiously welcomed Suffering (8) whom came with promises of serving both. Two out of the three on stage were dressed for the occasion in their robes and masks, garnished with the tell tale downward facing crosses of a true black metal troupe. (The drummer must have had a laundry day.)

They played it quite safe, I think, but perhaps because of that even a jolly jitterbug like myself could find enjoyment in their gruesome growls. They didn’t need a bass, but I am personally very fond of the instrument and as such was disheartened for the lack of it. All in all, I think the three did a tremendous job in delivering what was expected, as was evident for the headbangers ball in the front row. Safe old-school black metal with a bit of doom to keep me keen; yeah I’ll see them again.
