Another Pity My Brain showcase of the best riffs around. Despite being maybe once a year, I'm always happy to support Jamie's endeavours as he brings bands that so often don't play South Wales.
Into the top room of Clwb Ifor Bach on a day where Wales were stomped by Argentina in the Rugby World Cup, everyone needed some cheering up and with drumkits all over the place, Orange Amps on the stage and Radstocks finest riffmasters all ready to go it was another trip into the world of Sergeant Thunderhoof (8) the stomping Devils Daughter getting the set going as it so often does. Thick grooves get the amassing crowd swaying as their stoner heavy rock gets the night started. Only getting 30 minutes and having songs that are quite long (they're a bit proggy) they finish with Avon & Avalon to the cries of "one more song". Hopefully they can return to Cardiff for a longer set soon.
Up next though were German psychadelic post/sludge heavies Daily Thompson (8), slowing the moment right down with their first song and extended desert rock jam that built itself on repetition and a musical voodoo. After the upbeat sound of The Hoof, it was something that captivated some and left others a little cold. From here though they brought some dirty grunge and lots of fuzz, duelling vocals from bassist and guitarist. Less direct than the openers, Daily Thompson bring more layers to their sound considering they are a trio, they play with atmospheres for a stereophonic wave of fuzz.
It was then time for another change in style, as New Jersey stoner scene veterans The Atomic Bitchwax (8) took to the Fuel stage with the chugging riff of Edgar Winter Group's Frankenstein setting the scene for some dirty stoner punk, snarling vocals on top of raw distortion, it was wild and filthy from Hope You Die it the fantastic Shit Kicker. The trio living up to their veteran billing by just getting it done, inciting a party, as they called for movement and debuachery, the riffs flying fast and loud. Four tracks of the 15 song set came from 1999's The Atomic Bitchwax while the rest was one or two from each release, making the most of their lack of UK shows in the past by giving the Cardiff crowd the history of Bitchwax. There was even their cover of Kiss The Sun by fellow Jersey stoners Core (Split Up 1999) before the final five. Sleazy, stoner rocking that was a rarity on these shores, The Atomic Bitchwax deserve their kudos.
