A View From The Patriot: Rock For Llamau (Alex Tobias)

Rock For Llamau, The Patriot, Crumlin, 24.05.25

Due to work and some family constraints I was unfortunately only able to get to the one day of this three day charity show and after fighting through the traffic I got there just in time for the final three acts of the day.

Soulweaver (7) entered the stage at The Patriot to a big applause from the packed crowed, Very lively and and storming around the stage with a lot of energy and vigour. Soulweaver consist of guitarist/singer a bass player and drummer, the fact that there is only three of them if you weren't looking and just listening you would not know, there sound was very tight and crunchy with plenty of fast rock riffs with lots of prog influences thrown in to boot.

Constantly moving about the stage with command and lots of energy which very much made the crowed give them lots of cheers and banging of there heads in return. A mid set melodic ballad which singer/guitarist had told the crowed was a dedication to his partner who is on bass was a nice change of pace and clearly a good sing along song. Very good set by a band that was my first time viewing, would definitely recommend catching them at any shows they have coming up.

I have seen Greyfox Conspiracy (7) before at the Patriot and from knowing how much they got the crowed going the last time I saw them I was very much looking forward to watching them again, I was not disappointed at all, with classic rock riffs a plenty and a southern American lick that oozes from the rhythms that this band put out it forces your body to move whether you want to or not.

Both guitarists had time to shine throughout the entire set with solos that your eyes could not look away from to a bass player with the most classic rock hair you will see this side of Robert Plant's house in Monmouth. The singer came onto stage with a bowler hat and staff with smooth Sunglasses on that screamed smoothness and his vocals matched the style in abundance.

Greyfox Conspiracy are a band that play a very tight set of great classic rock songs but also have a good connection with the crowed, one example was a song called Preacher Man where the singer walked into the crowed to bless the heads of the fans as the band played out the song on stage, a very enjoyable set filled with groovy rock licks and headbanging old school metal nods.

I have seen, taken photos and filmed King Kraken (8) many times in the past but this is my first time actually giving my nonsense opinion on them in a review, where to start...… How about the entrance, which has changed slightly over the years I have seen them, the video package on the big screen behind the drums came on after the lights dimmed of ocean waves smashing against each other then the memorable voice and scene of Liam Neeson from the movie Wrath Of The Titans as Greek god Zeus talking to Poseidon about flooding the world with water, then the King Kraken logo appears as the band walk to the stage to a huge cheers from the crowd,

Kicking straight into the excellent song Scream which immediately get the crowed moving and headbanging with them. song after song the riffs and rage fuelled vocals rip throughout The Patriot one after another and by the time the classic Green Terror starts everyone is sweaty and loving the music that's filling there ears. King Kraken have such a old school sound of metal without ever sounding dated or out of place in todays scene, from crunching riffs of power to amazing solos in each song to the vocals being such a focal point of there music all round. They are a band that have a great rapport with the audience between songs and also while playing as they love to feed off back and forth with people at the front and all around the venue.

Crowds singing there songs just screams popularity and enjoyment from all that was there on the night. I can't speak highly enough of the guitar solos that are in the songs of this band, watching the guitarists fingers will keep you mesmerised, the drums plough through your soul with thumping beats and crashing, well, crashes. I urge you to catch King Kraken at any dates they have coming up, you will not be disappointed if you love any type of metal.

Rock For Llamau, is a three day event held by The Patriot to raise money for Llamau, the Welsh homelessness charity. It's three days of great bands and while I was only able to give you a feel for a bit of it. It'll be on my list for next year!
